This spots a little different to your average “Busman’s holiday”. Love a quirky South West escape? If you’re anything like me, you’ll know the joy of finding a getaway that feels a little out of the ordinary. Sure, hotels are lovely, but every now and then it’s nice to stay somewhere with a bit more personality. That’s exactly what I found at R&R Bus Retreat in the beautiful Ferguson Valley, near Bunbury.

Just an easy two-hour drive south of Perth, this adults-only retreat is tucked away on a peaceful farm in Wellington Mill. The stars of the show are two lovingly restored vintage buses, each transformed into a cosy country escape. It’s quirky, charming and wonderfully relaxing. The bus diver’s seat is still there too – all aboard!

We stayed in Charles, and from the moment we arrived I was completely smitten. Inside, it’s surprisingly spacious, with retro touches, a comfy queen bed, a kitchenette, private bathroom and all those thoughtful little extras that make a stay feel special. There were board games, books, local wine and a lovely sense that the owners have poured real care into every detail.

The bedroom, at the back, was compact, but very comfortable and cosy. You can tell the linen is good quality.

The bathroom, with shower was cute and functional, and there is a separate loo on the other side of the corridor.

A galley kitchen is well equipped and includes plenty to whip up an easy meal on the stove or platter.

Coffee and loose leaf tea are included.

I adored the setting. Rolling green paddocks, a winter creek, resident sheep wandering past and that blissful country quiet you just don’t get in the city.

On chilly evenings, the wood fire made the whole bus feel extra snug.

There’s even an outdoor clawfoot bath on the deck if you’re feeling brave enough for a soak under the stars.

Of course, the real bonus is that you’re perfectly placed to explore the very much underrated Ferguson Valley. It’s a gorgeous part of WA with boutique wineries, scenic drives, walking trails and plenty of hidden gems. We enjoyed lunch at St Aidan Wines, stopped in at Dardanup Baker, wandered through nearby Gnomesville, and visited the spectacular mural at Wellington Dam. If you enjoy gentle exploring, good food and beautiful scenery, this region really delivers.

R&R Bus Retreat is ideal for couples wanting a peaceful short break, or even solo travellers looking to recharge somewhere memorable. It’s close enough to Perth for an easy escape, yet feels a world away.

If you’ve been craving a cosy country getaway with a twist, this one is well worth adding to your list.
