Rustlers Steakhouse and Grill Albany

Rustlers Steakhouse and Grill

Regarded as an institution in Albany and recipient of a 2019 Gold Plate in the Family Dining category, Rustlers Steakhouse and Grill was on our list for lunch during a recent visit to Albany.

Previously the site of a gymnasium, renovations in 2010 saw the building transformed into a modern 200-seater restaurant.

Our party of six piled into the restaurant on a busy Friday lunchtime. Just the front of the restaurant was in use but there was plenty of space around our table. The back of the restaurant is huge with booths and plenty of greenery.

The menu is large with a good selection of starters, entrees and share plates. A couple that caught our eye was the oven-baked Camembert served with walnut bread and cranberry onion jam ($17.95) and sautéed garlic mushrooms with chorizo ($16).

However we decided that as we had come to a steakhouse for the steaks, we would concentrate on the main course and we all ordered steak!

Three people had the 500gm on the bone prime rib steak ($50), one had the 230gm sirloin ($33.95), one had the 310gm rump ($36) and I decided on the 285gm Scotch fillet ($40). All steaks come with a choice of steak chips or a baked potato and buttered vegetables or a salad with a choice of dressing. Sauces and butter are $2.50 – $3.00. We also ordered a portion of onion rings for the table – six large onion rings were $12.

Our steaks were all good although barely seasoned- the vegetables and the salads were crisp. We all enjoyed our meals as witnessed by the empty plates!

The restaurant has a good wine list featuring several popular Great Southern wines as well as other WA favourites.

Our server was pleasant but in need of some more training. When we asked for more time to decide on our meal choices she came back twice within the space of a few minutes to ask if we were ready yet. The reason for the server’s anxiety became obvious when as we were finishing our drinks, she started to wash the floor! We had booked for 1pm but were informed or aware that the restaurant closes at 2pm.

Rustlers is a good choice for steak lovers and also families as it has plenty of space and a good children’s menu.
