Guildford isn’t short of a pub or two – in face there are four! While the Rose and Crown and the Guildford Hotel are favourites, I hadn’t dined at the Stirling Arms Hotel before. Well, I tell a lie, I have been to Percy’s Playground for lunch, their separate kid-friendly play space. More on that in a bit.
There’s a large outdoor dining area, on the busy James Street. We sat in the bright art-deco-ish dining room, in a cosy, comfortable booth, easily seating four. The menu has all the pub classics; there’s also a pizza oven outside. While there are QR codes on the table, you can also order at the bar too.
After a round of drinks, our lunch arrived. My parents both got the battered fish and chips (with tartare, chips, salad). It’s worth noting my mum ordered hers from the senior’s menu. While it’s a smaller portion (1 fish, not two), it was still plenty.
The senior’s menu has five options – pasta, bangers and mash, and more. Plus a mid-week special (correct as September 2026) $30 for a senior’s meal and dessert (Mon-Thurs lunchtimes). Mr H enjoyed the Nashville fried chicken burger.
I went for a healthy option and chose the tasty Thai beef salad with 150g scotch, Asian slaw, mixed lettuce, coriander, sesame, chilli lime dressing. I thought the prices were reasonable and there are also plenty of gluten free options.
As I mentioned, out the back you’ll find Percy’s Playground (separate from the pub). If you have grandkids aged 10 and under with you, this is a great option to keep them occupied with a playground and sandpit.
It’s also worth noting that their neighbouring café/wine bar Billies is also very close to opening (as at September 2026). It looks great!
All in all, the food was good, honest pub grub. Nothing fancy, but it was a decent feed. The service was friendly too. Paired with a wander along the James Street strip, it made for a lovely little outing.
