Found in plain sight on Albany Highway, That Plant Cafe is a happy place for many: good coffee, green corners and a friendly hum of locals who clearly know they’re onto a winner. The baristas at the bustling cafe use their own house roast of beans and the coffee is excellent – smooth, rich and poured with quality milks. I really enjoyed sipping my flat white from a big mug.

There are a few small tables out the front if you like your latte with a side of sunshine and your pooch. The brunch and lunch menus are packed with all the favourites, plus a few twists like an espresso panna cotta. I’m pretty sure I spotted YouTube sensation chef Rob Nixon in the kitchen, so I am not surprised the cafe has a buzz. If you dine later in the day, expect to see burgers, salads, parmis (4 types) and more for lunch.

I opted for something light and healthy – the acai bowl (frozen smoothie bowl) was cool and creamy, topped with nutty granola, plus tangy passionfruit and pineapple. I ate it far too enthusiastically and earned myself a classic brain freeze, but absolutely worth it.

True to the name, the space is a leafy haven with plenty of indoor plants for sale, so you can take a little jungle home. There’s also a giftware nook, which makes the coffee wait feel more like a browse. Service is warm and quick, even when it’s buzzing (and it’s very popular, so expect a bit of a crowd at peak times).

If you’re after a spot that does a cracking flat white, easy brunch and a little retail therapy in one, That Plant Cafe is a Kelmscott keeper. Go for coffee, stay for the food, and treat yourself too.
