The Little Ferry Co

The Little Ferry Co

If you fancy spending a relaxing day or evening on the water around Perth then make sure you check out the Little Ferry Co that offers short cruises out of Elizabeth Quay.

The Little Ferry Co. offer various cruises to choose from departing every day; whether it be a โ€˜hop on, hop offโ€™ ferry service, morning or afternoon tea, twilight cruise or the recently added Optus Stadium tour. The company has also added a special service running ferry transportation to and from the stadium on game days. We chose to join the afternoon tea cruise.

We were greeted on board the fully enclosed boat by our skipper Bob. After being given a quick safety talk and shown the access to the life jackets we set off at a wonderfully leisurely pace out of the Quay, along the foreshore past the Bell Tower and the WA Rowing Club, on our way up to Claisebrook Cove, in East Perth.

Expecting the โ€œchugg, chugg, chuggโ€ usually associated with small boats we were pleasantly surprised to find that the ferries are powered by solar electricity, so all you hear is the gentle lapping of the water as you glide silently along, giving the sensation of sailing on a yacht.

The ferries only accommodate up to 11 people at any one time so the journey is quite an intimate one, allowing you to interact with your fellow passengers. Sailing along the river our skipper Bob kept us entertained with informative dialogue and amusing anecdotes. His knowledge of Perth and its surrounds, its history and goings on were astonishing.

Two of the guests had booked the Optus Stadium tour, so we stopped in to let them disembark at the jetty before carrying on to Claisebrook Cove.

Upon arrival at Claisebrook Cove, Bob tied up the ferry and escorted us to the riverside cafe โ€˜Toastโ€™, introduced us to the staff and organised to meet us at the jetty 2 hours later. Included in the cost of our excursion was our choice of coffee and cake, so we whiled away half an hour, chatting and people watching, after which we strolled around Claisebrook before meeting the ferry and fellow passengers for the return trip.

The couple from the stadium tour were already onboard as they were picked up first and they told us that they found the tour very enjoyable and informative. We all chatted amiably as Bob sailed us back to Elizabeth Quay, picking out points of interest along the way and docking at โ€˜On The Pointโ€™ (another port of call approximately halfway along the cruise) so that we could look around at the restaurants and bars established in the riverside precinct.

The whole afternoon was very enjoyable and I think I will be booking again to take my Grandchildren for a school holiday treat.
