Titanic. The Human Story Exhibition, Northbridge

For a limited time, Titanic. The Human Story has berthed in Perth, bringing a powerful and very human retelling of the 1912 disaster to Northbridge Centre. This travelling exhibition, which drew over 150,000 visitors in Brisbane, offers a reflective, immersive experience ideal for history lovers, thoughtful days out, or a special outing with adult family and friends.

Located on Beaufort Street at the edge of Perth’s Cultural Centre, it’s an easy add‑on to a lunch in Northbridge or a visit to the nearby museums and galleries.

A deeply human, audio‑led experience

Rather than a traditional “glass case” museum show, this exhibition leads you on a slow journey through the ship’s final days.

On arrival, each visitor is given a simple audio device and earphones (included in the ticket price). The commentary is clear and well paced, so you can take your time and listen as you move. For anyone who prefers listening rather than reading a lot of small text panels, this makes the exhibition very accessible and less tiring.

The audio combines narration, music, sound effects and first‑hand testimonies from passengers and crew. As you progress, you hear individual stories – families travelling to start new lives, crew members on duty that night, and accounts of the rescue. It’s a moving experience that encourages you to pause and reflect.

Stepping aboard: recreations and artefacts

The exhibition cleverly recreates areas of the ship so you feel as though you are “boarding” Titanic:

  • A First‑Class corridor and cabin, highlighting the luxury enjoyed by wealthy travellers
  • Compact Third‑Class spaces, showing the stark contrast in conditions
  • Over 200 original artefacts, including photographs, letters, tickets, personal keepsakes and items recovered from the wreck site

These objects are small windows into the lives of people on board – from everyday belongings to carefully preserved documents. Combined with the audio stories, they give the tragedy a very personal dimension.

Further on, a detailed scale model of Titanic helps you appreciate the size and layout of the ship, while another model shows how the wreck now lies in two main sections on the ocean floor.

Interactive elements (and visiting with grandchildren)

Although this is primarily a reflective, adult‑friendly exhibition, there are a few hands‑on features that younger visitors also enjoy:

  • A “touch the iceberg” installation where you can feel just how cold the Atlantic waters were
  • Short video clips explaining the night of the sinking in a straightforward, visual way

If you’re visiting with grandchildren, children around 8 years and up will get the most from the historical content and audio stories. Do be aware that the themes include loss of life and may be emotionally heavy for more sensitive children, so you may want to prepare them beforehand or skip certain sections if needed.

The exhibition took around 1.5 hours at an unhurried pace, with time to pause, listen and look closely at the displays.

Comfort and accessibility

The exhibition space is indoors and climate‑controlled, which makes it a comfortable choice in hot or wet weather.

  • Walking & standing: Expect to be on your feet for most of the visit, walking slowly through the galleries. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
  • Lighting & sound: Some areas are dimly lit to enhance atmosphere, and there is background audio. Those with visual or hearing considerations may wish to bring their usual aids.
  • Mobility: The venue is described as pram‑friendly, which suggests step‑free access through the exhibition. If you use a wheelchair or mobility aid, it’s worth confirming details directly with the organisers when booking.
  • Toilets: Toilets are located just outside the exhibition entry.
  • Food & drink: Food and drinks aren’t permitted inside the galleries, but there are plenty of cafés and eateries nearby in Northbridge for before or after your visit.

For those who prefer quieter conditions, weekdays during school hours are likely to be more peaceful than weekends or school holidays.
