The Duke, a pub in Perthโs northern suburbs, is British in name and in nature. While I wouldnโt go so far as to call it a theme pub, the heart of the Duke is British. My husband and I originally hail from the UK. Me, a โten-pound pomโ arrived as a child in the 50’s, while my Yorkshireman husband, emigrated from Sheffield in the 1980’s. We enjoy visiting the Duke, in Carramar, as it has that intimate cosy feel of a traditional British pub.
The modern pub, just a few years old, has a bit of character. There’s the main bar, dining room and more casual sports bar (with TAB and pool tables) and a few outdoor courtyards.ย On a sunny day the courtyard is very pleasant to sit in, during winter the log fire roars, creating a warm and cosy feel in the main bar.
Drinks
The beers change regularly. English favourites Old Speckled Hen and Newcastle Brown Ale have been on tap here, as well as Aussie favourites. Overall, thereโs a good range of beers and a range of wine, spirits and cocktails too.
Food
We chose to sit in the more formal dining room, though there’s also plenty of tables around the bar area, courtyard and some sofas near the fireplace if you’re after a more casual bite to eat.
The menu, which seems to change regularly, is full of typical pub fayre and has some British classics on there for the ex-pats. A pork pie platter, Ploughmanโs platter, gammon steak with egg and chips, beef and Guinness pie, Fish n chips with mushy peas, bangers and mash. There’s also risottos, burgers, pizzas, salads and much more to choose from. There’s a daily specials menu too, making a choice can take a while!
There was a group of us dining. Some shared platters, others chose their own dishes. My husband and I shared the pork pie platter ($19), brimming with a whole traditional pork pie, pickles, cheddar, crispy onion rings, bread and hot English mustard.
We also picked a meatball dish from the share menu. We were pleasantly surprised at just how large the serving is, making it tremendous value at $15. Pork and fennel meatballs are delicious and cooked in a cider braised tomato sauce, all sitting on a big helping of potato mash, with aged reggiano cheese.
The burgers also look very tasty and are served with loads of chips.
Service
We always find the waitstaff friendly at The Duke. I’d recommend booking a table, as quite a few times we’ve walked in and the dining room has been fully booked.
All in All
As far as suburban pubs go, we’d have to say The Duke is one of the best all-rounders.
