We’ve always enjoyed a drive through the rolling green hills of the Ferguson Valley, just east of Bunbury. So, we thought we’d linger longer with a two-night stay at Hidden Cabins’ “Henry”. This tiny cabin sits quietly on a large working vineyard, overlooking chardonnay vines and a tranquil dam. It’s off-grid, easy to access, and so peaceful, making it ideal for a short, restorative break.

We settled in via a gravel path with a handy cart to pull our bags. There’s a couple of steps up to the deck and an easy code access key lock. The cabin is compact, though it’s lofty ceiling and huge windows give it a spacious feel. A king size bed, well equipped kitchen with bench-table and bathroom (with shower, sink and eco loo) are all that you’ll need. Outside on the deck are a BBQ and chairs, plus another couple of chairs are found on the edge of the bush, by the firepit.

Mornings were for lazing in the firm, but comfortable king bed, watching soft light wash over the vines with a steaming cuppa in hand (loose leaf teas, vegan hot chocolate and freshly roasted coffee beans are found in the kitchen – BYO milk).

Evenings were for a local wine by the firepit, with sweeping vineyard views and birdsong from the friendly resident magpies for company. When it cooled, the compact indoor wood burner warmed the cabin quickly. Campfires are typically permitted May to October (Shire dependent).

Henry is well set up for simple, enjoyable meals. The kitchenette has a two-burner gas stove, quality cookware, plates and wine glasses, plus pantry staples (olive oil, salt, pepper, sugar). We made a generous cheese platter and snacked under the stars, at our own pace. A Bush Minibar stocks easy to make vegetarian dinners (mushroom risotto, lentil curry); take what you like and settle up later.

Practical comforts are covered: hot shower, a non-flush eco-friendly compost toilet (with straightforward instructions), quality bedding and towels, Weber Baby Q, books, board games and a picnic rug. Power and water are via solar, gas and tanks, so mindful use is appreciated. There’s a mini fridge; be sure to bring an esky and ice if you’re stocking up.

The location is a highlight. You’re minutes from many acclaimed cellar doors (Green Door, Willow Bridge, Talisman, St Aidan), breweries, and Wellington National Park’s walking trails and huge dam mural. On hot days, confident swimmers can dip in the winery’s dam near to the cabin.

I’m not going to tell you exactly where Hidden Cabins is located – that’s half the fun. Plus, it’s only 2 hours’ drive from the city. Be sure to seek it out yourself for a simple, scenic stay that makes you priorities comfort and quiet with a view.
