It had been a very long time between drinks at Steves Nedlands — 25 years, to be exact — and if I’m honest, I couldn’t even tell you what the old Steves looked like. The hotel’s redevelopment itself was years ago now (way back in 2009), so this visit felt less like a return and more like discovering a Perth institution all over again.
What I found was a slick, modern venue that still feels grounded in what Steves has long been known for: a genuine appreciation for WA wines and relaxed, good-quality dining.
Found on The Avenue in Nedlands, just a block back from the Swan River and not far from UWA, Steves is a lovely spot for a quiet weekday lunch. It has that easy western suburbs feel, polished without being stuffy, stylish without trying too hard. Whether you’re meeting friends, lingering over a glass of wine, or just after a pleasant lunch somewhere a little more grown-up, it fits the bill nicely.
Dine inside, out on the patio, or relax in the beer garden on a sunny day, depending on the weather and your mood. The menu has all the favourites, many with an Asian twist and plenty of dietary options. On our table, the classic steak sandwich was a clear winner. Properly satisfying and full of flavour, it was a dish Mr H had specifically returned for and he would happily order again. It does the basics well, includes a perfectly cooked eye filet steak and doesn’t overcomplicate things with too many gourmet components. The chips and aioli were perfect accompaniments.
A simple salad of Baby cos, peach, tomato, avocado, grilled halloumi and vincotto also went down well, fresh and nicely presented, though it did arrive without the avocado promised on the menu, which was a little disappointing. It only occurred to me after I had finished, so I didn’t really see the point in mentioning it to the staff, as I’d enjoyed it otherwise.
Still, that small hiccup aside, Steves feels contemporary and well put together. For a relaxed lunch in Nedlands — particularly if you appreciate a good wine list and a smart, comfortable setting — Steves is well worth revisiting. Even if, like me, it’s been a couple of decades between visits.
