Old Mates, Kalamunda

Old Mate’s Kalamunda

If there is one thing the Perth Hills town of Kalamunda is not short of, it’s a café! One of the busiest, Old Mates, has moved into a newer, bigger venue on Haynes Street. Still in the heart of town, the café is now even closer to several local attractions, including Kalamunda Library, the Zig Zag Gallery, Kalamunda History Village and the town centre’s many boutique gift shops.

The new space is noticeably roomier than the old café, with more tables and a great mix of seating. The comfy booths are especially inviting if you are catching up with friends over coffee and cake or settling in for a longer brunch. There is also a beautiful Kalamunda mural that gives the café plenty of local character and makes the larger space feel warm and welcoming.

Old Mates is a lovely option when you want somewhere casual, central and comfortable. Meet your own mates for a relaxed cuppa, linger over lunch or stop in after a browse through the nearby galleries or library. The all-day menu offers plenty of breakfast and brunch favourites, while the cabinet is full of tempting sweet and savoury bites.

The coffee (a Five Senses roast I believe) is very good too, served in a generously sized mug – always appreciated!

My dad enjoyed a homemade sausage roll with his cuppa.

While I enjoyed poached eggs and bacon on gluten free toast. It was tasty, though one of the eggs wasn’t runny, and I would have liked some butter included.

The bigger venue means it feels better suited to groups, though it still has a friendly local atmosphere. There is plenty of indoor seating, and the booths are a comfortable option if you prefer a little more space and privacy than a small café table. Plus, it’s dog friendly.

Old Mates is very well placed for combining food with a little culture or local history. Zig Zag Gallery is nearby and regularly hosts interesting exhibitions, while Kalamunda History Village is well worth a look for anyone interested in the stories of the Perth Hills. Kalamunda Library is also close by, making this part of Haynes Street a handy little hub for a leisurely morning. If you visit on a Sunday, you can also wander through the Kalamunda Farmers Market before or after your coffee stop.

With its newer, larger home, cosy booths, lovely mural and excellent location, Old Mates is a great place to put on your Kalamunda list.
