Ishka, Hillarys Boat Harbour

Fabulous views over Hillarys Boat Harbour and an interesting menu persuaded my husband to go to the Ishka Restaurant for a birthday lunch.

Upstairs (there is a lift available) from the popular Breakwater Tavern, Ishka has a slew of awards dating from 2009 to 2017. The restaurant seats more than 60 customers and has recently moved from the right-hand side of the Breakwater building to the left side. Apparently, there was too much noise drifting upstairs from the pub but that problem has now been solved. The right-hand side is now a lounge area with several televisions showing sport. A modified menu is available.

Ishka, which is Irish for water, has a lot of tables on the balcony but as it was 39c outside and there were no fans, we decided that the air conditioning inside was a much better option!

The menu looks good with a choice of eight entrees including oysters ($4.5-$5 each) prepared six different ways.

Mains offer something for everyone with an emphasis on seafood. Barramundi, snapper, salmon and a seafood platter are on offer together with steak, lamb loin and vegetable ravioli.  Prices range from $32-$39 and $88 for the platter. Six desserts looked really yummy especially the sticky fig and ginger pudding ($16.5) and the rhubarb fool ($15)

After debating over several options we decided on the seafood platter to share. Four half shell scallops, four natural oysters, seared salmon, chilled prawns with cocktail sauce, market fish, fried soft shell crab, mussels marinara, seasonal salad and hand-cut chips.

We ordered drinks and the platter to share and sat back to enjoy the views. And we had plenty of time to watch the swimmers, paddle boarders and kayaks, as service was very slow.

However our drinks finally arrived and so did the platter, which looked really good.

We enjoyed the prawns and scallops. My husband felt that although the oysters and mussels were fine, they were not the best that he has had in WA. The salmon was good as were the chips and the crab, but the market fish was dry and overcooked. I did mention the fish to the waitress who was apologetic and offered us a free dessert or a drink.

Overall we enjoyed our meal. The service although slow was good with staff members friendly and helpful and that view is certainly spectacular.
