These days, it’s surprising how many people have a gluten intolerance, I’m one of them. For those of us navigating the challenges of a coeliac diet or gluten sensitivity, Dough Street is a shining star in Perth’s north – a 100% gluten-free bakery where “settling” for alternative GF options, becomes a positive experience of discovering new favorites. The cafe’s huge popularity creates notorious queues, but strategic timing (mid-morning on weekdays) can minimise your wait times. It’s handy to hear queues move fast. Giving you plenty of time to figure out what you will order.
The interior space does offer proper seating, but as you’ll most likely be sitting by a fast-moving queue on weekends, it doesn’t really feel like a spot to linger and enjoy. I’ve visited Dough Street a few times now and always grab a quick takeaway to devour in my car.
Their baked offerings show that gluten-free need not mean taste-free. The cinnamon scrolls are very popular, and the bakery is constantly bringing out new items.
I visited just before Easter so just had to try a hot cross bun and a mini egg New York style cookie. I enjoyed both, though found the texture of the hot cross bun too doughy and wet.
I’ve also enjoyed their sausage rolls – flaky pastry as a GF-er is elusive. Their piping hot sausage rolls were all the meaty, pastry goodness I’ve been missing for the past 8+ years.
Their croissants are almost as good as the real deal too.
I haven’t tried their coffee yet, but their busy baristas would indicate that it’s good. The staff deserve special mention for their patient explanations and genuine interest in customer satisfaction, even when constantly under the pump. While parking can be challenging during peak times, there always seems to be a free spot or two in the car park.
For anyone following a gluten-free lifestyle by necessity or choice, Dough Street offers that increasingly rare experience: eating out without compromise, where everything on the menu is an option for you. I’ll be back, for sure.
