Come for the cellar door, stay for the whole experience at this brilliant South West winery. Some cellar doors are memorable. Edwards Wines in Cowaramup definitely is, and for all the right reasons. From the moment you arrive, this place feels a little different. The cellar door itself is set in a striking hangar-style space, with the grand, automatic doors parting as you walk closer.

The star of the show is impossible to miss. Matilda, the beautifully restored 1943 Tiger Moth that holds pride of place on site.

Founder Brian Edwards flew Matilda solo from Binbrook, Lincolnshire in England to Australia in 1990 tracing the historic “Kangaroo Route. Then he and his wife Jenny bought land near Margaret River and created the family estate. But there’s more to love here than a great backstory.

The cellar door is open daily, with guided tastings, gourmet platters, chocolate pairings and a relaxed setting overlooking the vines. The finishes on the space are just stunning. I particularly loved the propeller on the ceiling.

You can genuinely take your time here, instead of feeling hurried through. This is where Edwards Wines really shines as a destination rather than just a quick wine stop. I sipped a couple of wines, and chose the excellent Shiraz Grenache Rose to take home.

On the same site you’ll also find Flow Gallery, a contemporary gallery led by Margaret River landscape artist Emily Eldridge, showcasing many Southwest artists.

So, if you enjoy art almost as much as a good Chardy, you’re in luck.

Then there’s the delicious Miss Chow’s Margaret River, the on-site restaurant next to the cellar door. We stopped there for lunch and absolutely loved the share dishes and beautiful dining room. So instead of doing the usual “wine tasting, then where shall we go for lunch?” shuffle, you can simply stay put here and enjoy a modern-Asian meal overlooking the vines. That all-in-one ease is gold.

Wine, art, lunch and a fascinating slice of local history in one beautiful setting. That’s my kind of outing! The venue is wheelchair accessible, which is always worth knowing. Edwards Wines is a destination in its own right – be sure to check it out for yourself when you’re next in Margs.
