Lady of Ro

If you love Middle Eastern / Continental European food or just great food in general, do try Lady of Ro on Rokeby Rd, Subi.

Good friends of ours who’ve been many times and loved it invited us to join them last night for dinner.

What a super little place! It’s only small but big on fabulous food.

The atmosphere is relaxed and informal with dining inside and out and we were immediately made to feel welcome by the friendly staff.

We chose the $70 chefs special as every dish sounded so good, this price also includes corkage on byo.

Our pals brought along a rather special magnum of Châteauneuf-du-Pape which didn’t last very long at all….neither did the two bottles of bubbles and the Petit Chablis!

We’d hardly started on the bubbles when the food came out and we were all ravenous. Our pals had cycled 127kms and I’d swum a mile earlier in the day so our appetites were enormous.

First to the table was flat bread with hummus and tzatziki which was super and the start of more terrific dishes to come.

How they made the tzatziki so rich and creamy I’ll never know, maybe it was made with labneh, but it was heaven on a plate!

The chargrilled octopus was an absolute delight, in fact I’ve not had it as good since enjoying it at a beach bar in Spain many years ago.

After the starters, we asked for a break so we could digest and enjoy without popping and the staff were more than happy to accommodate us and said to just let them know when we were ready.

After we’d finished the bubbles and the best part of the Chablis we cracked open the C-d-P and the first of our marvellous mains arrived.

The slow-cooked lamb shoulder was meltingly tender with a wonderful light smoky flavour and the Israeli chicken was equally delicious. The chargrilled vegetables were glistening and beautifully cooked and would also be wonderful as a dish on their own, not just as a side.

We all agreed that the pumpkin ravioli was a teeny bit tough and thick but the flavours were well balanced and tasty. Our friends have had this before and apparently it’s usually very light.

By the time the puds arrived we were in fact almost ready to pop but we soldiered on as they looked so tempting and tasted lovely.

Everything was beautifully presented in an unpretentious, slightly rustic way and it was a magnificent feast all round.

I can’t recommend this place to you highly enough, but don’t take my word for it, do try it for yourself
