Having spent my entire working life at jobs where I am on my feet all day I have found that I am prone to the odd niggling back problem. Over the years this has cost me time, money and also affected my quality of life, with days off work, physiotherapy treatment and painkillers.
Around 18 months ago whilst having treatment again, my physiotherapist suggested that I tried Clinical Pilates to help strengthen my back muscles.
Clinical Pilates differs from Mat Pilates and group reformer Pilates in that rather than being in a large group class where everyone follows the same routine, a clinical Pilates class is a much smaller class with each client having their exercise programme individually designed for them by the instructor using specialised Pilates equipment such as the reformer, trapeze table, wunda chair and spine corrector.
Having already been a client at Live Well Hillarys for physiotherapy treatment, I booked myself in for an assessment before starting on a program with one of their instructors. The instructors are all physiotherapists who have also studied Clinical Pilates, and the classes have a maximum of three clients at any time so the instructor is able to make sure that you are doing the exercises correctly without doing any damage to your body.
Obviously, having this individual attention is more expensive than a group class, but I am able to claim for Clinical Pilates against my private health cover which reduces my cost by almost half, and when taking into account the improvement in my back problems, posture and my general well being I think that it is more than worth the cost.
Pilates exercise can be helpful for many conditions other than back pain. By correctly exercising it is possible to build core strength, improve posture, flexibility and also reduce the re-occurrence of injuries. Although primarily I started Pilates for my back problems I have found that my overall strength and flexibility have improved beyond my expectations and I look forward to my weekly sessions. And if you want to try Pilates as a form of exercise on a more casual basis, Live Well also offer weekly Mat Pilates classes at both Hillarys and Currambine.
