If you love a country pub with history woven into every nook, pop The Chidlow Tavern on your Perth Hills to-do list. Just a few minutes from the tranquil shores of Lake Leschenaultia, this cosy, rustic tavern (that dates back to 1908) is a handy stop after a lakeside wander or a scenic drive.

Step inside the old pub, warmly named “The Chids” by locals, and you’re greeted by character in spades. First named Oxford Inn, in what was then the Chidlow’s Well area, the tavern was open 24 hours to service the railway and travelers. Warm timber, old photographs, and railway memorabilia that nod to the village’s past on the old Eastern Rail Line.

The menu leans to classic pub meals: fish and chips, a proper parmi, hearty winter warmers. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and the service has that friendly country rhythm. There’s a big beer garden out the back which could use a little TLC, but on a sunny day it still does the job for a relaxed pint. Mr H enjoyed smoked honey soy pork belly bites and salt ‘n pepper squid, while I had a brisket and slaw burger – tasty except for the GF bun, which was a little stale. To be fair, gluten free bread doesn’t have the best consistency at the best of times.

Before you head off, take a moment to take in the beautiful ANZAC mural; it’s a huge tribute and a lovely surprise in this small Perth Hills village.

If your idea of a good day out looks like a simple morning stroll or picnic at Lake Leschenaultia, followed by a no-frills lunch at a tavern, this is for you. Bring a jumper on cooler days, the Perth Hills air always seems a little cooler than the rest of Perth. If you like a side of history with your lunch, you’ll feel right at home here.
