When driving along the picturesque South Western Highway, be sure to stop off at the Waroona Vistors Centre and Art and Craft Gallery in the delightful town of Waroona.Located on the main drag, believe me, you will be hard pressed to miss it. This quirky centre has its very own mascot, ‘Mooriel’ (love a cow pun!) who is adorned in different costumes throughout the year and stands front and centre, ready to greet her visitors.
‘Mooriel’, as well as the many other pops of colourful craft you will discover scattered around the town face, were part of the ‘The Heartfelt’ and the continuing ‘Yarn Bomb Waroona’ projects. After the tragic fires of 2016 staff and volunteers wanted to “inject some colour” back into their surrounds and the result is delightful. It’s eye catching crocheted pieces that decorate the surrounds is lovely to see as you are driving along. It was because of this that we stopped to have a look. And thank goodness we did.
So many crafty delights surrounding the outside of the visitors centre, but many more treasures await inside. It is a lovely large space with beautifully and lovingly presented displays of arts and crafts. There is an amazing range, you won’t know where to look next!Paintings and hand crafted pieces by local artists.Including “paintings in various styles and mediums, pottery, woodwork, handmade cards, lavender bags, hand towels, pot holders and tea cosies, knitted baby sets and booties, cushions, scarves and slippers, preserves, local music cds and books, and pet scratchers to name a few”.
I certainly defy anyone to leave empty handed, nearly all items are for sale and there really are some lovely and unique gifts for loved ones or why not spoil yourself!
As well as the gallery, there is of course a well stocked section of pamphlets, maps and events flyers regarding Waroona and the surrounding shires. They have: “brochures on fishing, walk trails, firewood collecting areas, seasonal work”.ย Do make sure you take the time to have a chat to the lovely volunteers. We spoke to a delightful staff member who divulged a few insider tips about the local weir. She was a wealth of knowledge on the area and was more than happy to direct us to swimming holes and local camping hotspots. There is plenty of parking and easy access as well as spacious public toilets.A must do stop when either staying in Waroona or enroute to the great Southern.
