Looking for a unique and relaxing experience in the Shark Bay region? The Artesian Hot Tub at Peron Homestead Precinct offers visitors a perfect blend of relaxation, history and outback charm.
The star attraction is the natural artesian hot tub, maintaining a delightful temperature of around 40ยฐC. The tub is safely enclosed with gates and features easy access. This therapeutic water comes from an artesian bore drilled in 1922-1923, which historically supplied water to livestock through three windmills and nine watering points.
Important Tips for Visitors:
- Keep glass items away from the hot tub area
- Take regular breaks to prevent overheating
- Stay hydrated with plenty of water
- Note that the water is not suitable for drinking
- Avoid light-coloured swimwear as the bore water may cause staining
Excellent Facilities Include:
- Clean changing rooms
- Drop toilet facilities
- Two BBQ stations
- Sheltered areas
- Multiple picnic tables
- Large grassed area
- Interpretive centre in the former overseer’s quarters
The 45-minute self-guided Pepper Trail offers fascinating insights into the historic pastoral station. Visitors can explore the shearing shed, shearers’ quarters, stockyard, and workers’ kitchens. The catching pens and vintage equipment throughout the precinct provide interesting glimpses into the past.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the regular wildlife visitors. The hot tub overflow attracts native birds including emus. Along the trail, you might spot bobtails, various bird species, and possibly even an echidna.
The visitor centre features an impressive wall mural depicting regional history from multiple perspectives – from Indigenous stories and French maritime exploration to early pastoral life and modern conservation efforts. Learn about Project Eden, which aims to restore native wildlife to the Peron Peninsula.
Best Time to Visit: Early mornings tend to be quieter than the popular late afternoon period. Plan 2-3 hours to fully experience all attractions and facilities.
