Did you have ballet lessons when you were a child, only to give it up as you got older and into your teens? Do you wish that you still had that gracefulness and posture that you used to have? If youโve ever regretted not carrying on with your ballet classes, now you have the opportunity go back and reconnect with your inner Margot Fonteyn.
Developed by the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) in response to a growing demand for ballet classes for older learners, Pilates Studio of WA, Karrinyup is now offering adult ballet classes. Although targeted at those over 50, there is no upper or lower age limit to be a ‘Silver Swan’. The teachers are trained to teach a variety of abilities, and you are welcome to attend whether you are have never danced before, or have previous experience and want to get back into the swing of it.
Having never learnt ballet as a child I roped in my friend Sally, who had childhood lessons, to join me one Thursday morning to partake in one of the ballet classes.
The class was quite small, with perhaps a dozen students which was the perfect size as it meant we were all able to have plenty of space at the barre and see the two teachers clearly during the lesson. Even though I have never had ballet lessons before Monique our main teacher explained each movement clearly and Rachael the second teacher demonstrated the moves so that we could follow, and I felt quite comfortable as a beginner that I was not too much out of my depth.
Now, if you are at this moment imagining a group of mature ladies in tutus performing the dance of the little swans from Swan Lake then you have the wrong idea; the class is more about stretching, posture, mobility, balance, co-ordination and building muscle strength whilst also engaging the brain, offering a complete body-mind exercise.
After the class I must admit I could tell that my muscles had been worked, but unlike a frantic step class or boot class at the local gym I did not look like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards; in fact, I felt rather serene and composed.
As the class is new, there is only one class a week at the moment which is on Thursday mornings, but we were told that if there was enough interest then extra classes could be added on afternoons and evenings subject to demand. The classes can be booked in advance on the online booking system on the website. I will certainly be signing up for further lessons, its a great way to keep fit and active and have fun at the same time. If you are interested in joining the class more details can be found on their website.
