Three Anchors Bar and Restaurant Review

Middleton Beach in Albany is a popular destination with both locals and tourists. It’s about four kilometres east of the Albany city centre and is touted as a safe swimming beach.

At its southern tip is Ellen Cove and the Three Anchors Bar and Restaurant. Established in 2012, the Three Anchors is a great place for family meals. It’s two minutes from the beach with a children’s playground right outside. We booked for Sunday lunch and I was pleased that we had a reservation, as it was very busy. Our table was at a window and we were able to enjoy the lovely views out to sea.

Three Anchors has a large premises and a large menu. The food is mainly pub grub but there were a few surprises such as the Pea-falafels with grilled flatbread, hummus, cherry tomato and hot sauce ($16.50). I decided to go for the local beer battered fish with chips, garden salad and tartare sauce ($25) and my husband chose the Garlic prawn hot pot, local olive oil, butter and fresh chilli with crusty bread ($20).

There is no table service and with just one staff member manning the counter, my husband queued for 15 minutes to place our meal order.

When our food arrived it had been well presented and everything was fresh. I enjoyed my fish and chips but my husband wasn’t a fan of the hot-pot as he felt there was not much flavour.

Three Anchors has indoor and outdoor seating and an al fresco area with a stage for the Sunday music sessions. The outdoor seating is an ideal spot for families as parents and grandparents can enjoy a drink while keeping an eye on the children in the playground.

Three Anchors also boasts a take-away kiosk – good news for those who like to enjoy a picnic or just take a coffee onto the beach.

For such a large place, I was surprised that there was only one toilet but the staff directed me to extra toilets in the kiosk area of the bar.

Three Anchors is popular because of its location, food and reasonable prices. Staff members were not particularly friendly but the job did get done. A Big 4 holiday park is at the northern end of Middleton Beach and the close proximity of the Three Anchors is obviously a bonus for campers.

After lunch I recommend going for a walk along the surf-patrolled beach to walk off those calories!

The Middleton Beach foreshore enhancement project is currently underway. When complete it will provide increased parking, landscaping and lighting as well as upgrades to the Ellen Cove amphitheatre and a pedestrian walkway, boardwalk and jetty link.

Middleton Beach is already a great place to visit and these enhancements will really add to its good reputation.
