Republic of Fremantle Distillery Tour and Tasting Review

On a wet Sunday morning, we decided to head into Fremantle that afternoon and check out one of the ‘new boys on the block’.  Republic of Fremantle is a gin distillery located on Pakenham Street in the ‘West End’ of Fremantle.  It is in one of the old buildings that are synonymous in Fremantle and the ‘West End’ is now home to a number of bars and restaurants.

We booked in online for a tour later that day. Finding the place was easy as it had a very nice exterior and definitely stood out.  We were met in the bar and realized that it was a personal tour for 2.  Our lovely tour leader took us through into the distillery and showed us the huge copper still and then went on to explain the history of the Republic of Fremantle and also very thoroughly went through the process involved to make the gin and also the vodka.  They very proudly make it from scratch getting their wine from the Swan Valley.

In the distillery, we also saw the set up for another experience that they have and that is the Distill Your Own Gin School, which is a hands-on experience where you create your own gin and you get to distil it in their mini-pot stills.  This experience is for 2.5 hours and costs $170pp.

Our tour lasted for 45 minutes and cost $25pp, this included the tour of the distillery, tasting of the Signature vodka, full-bodied gin and aromatic gin and also to finish off we had a choice of vodka and soda or gin and tonic.

We finished the tour by having our drink in the very nice bar at the front of the distillery, very busy on a Sunday afternoon.  In the bar they serve food and drinks; you can choose from their big range of cocktails, have something to eat from their tapas-style menu or another drink from their drinks menu.  They really do excel in their cocktail making, very unique and different ones to try.  I had a Tiny Dancer which had a vodka base and my partner had a Charlie Chaplin which was gin-based.  They were really nice but quite small, it was definitely a case of quality over quantity, and they ranged in price from $17-$22. The staff were very attentive and drinks were brought to us very promptly.  The food menu looked nice,  what we noticed coming out of the kitchen looked good and it certainly smelled amazing, but this time we were not there for food….maybe next time.

As always you have to contend with Fremantle parking or lack thereof.  There is some street parking around but not a lot, which would probably be about a 5-10 minute walk from the main parking in Fremantle.  It is a quick stroll across the road from the train station.

As I said there are a couple of other bars and restaurants around but that’s another story.
