Senior-focused equipment is popping up at parks all over Perth. It’s designed to enhance physical and mental well-being for seniors of all abilities. Many parks also offer exercise equipment for all, perfect for those who are on a budget, don’t want a gym membership and prefer to work out in the great outdoors. See our guide to fitness parks in Perth here…

Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space, Dalkeith

Neil McDougall Park, Como

The senior exercise area at Neil McDougall Park is similar to an outdoor gym. It features a range of equipment – balance beams, core twisters, wave bars and more. These all help to improve the body’s balance as well as strengthen motor skills. There’s balance beams, steps and bridges, with rails for extra support. Afterwards, enjoy a gentle stroll around the lake. The footpath is flat and it’s a relatively short walk. Sporadic benches are handy to sit, rest and enjoy the view. There is more fitness equipment along the way, if you want to stop for a work out of a cross trainer! See the Seniorocity review here.

Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub

The popular Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub has an exercise staircase, known locally as the Jacob’s Ladder of the North. The Whitfords Nodes Stairway has 145 steps and a couple of landings complete with seating for those who need to take a breather on the way up or down. Exercise equipment includes parallel bars complete with instructions on how to use them as well as other pieces of equipment that remain a mystery to me although some large young men were enjoying making use of them. There are also drinking fountains and a bicycle parking area nearby. The Nodes is also a good place to bring grandchildren, as there is a large shaded play park with nearby bbq areas, tables, chairs and restrooms. See the Seniorocity review here.

Hyde Park,

Taking a walk around Hyde Park, along the tree-lined pathways, is a lovely way to spend a sunny morning. A lap around the inner lakes area of the inner-city park is a pleasant 800m round trip, so be sure to do another lap if you’d like a longer walk. The walk is flat, making it easy to stroll along the path at your own pace. It’s also gopher and wheelchair friendly. Fitness equipment is found at intervals around the lake. See the Seniorocity review here.
