Chamberlain Gorge River Cruise, The Kimberley

Chamberlain Gorge

El Questro Wilderness Park has an abundance of activities and adventures, and for most of them you do need a reasonable level of fitness. One activity we found to do that required no exertion at all was a river cruise along the Chamberlain River.

Chamberlain Gorge

We explored the Chamberlain Gorge on a leisurely afternoon cruise. We were met at the station by our rangers, Vinnie and Tommy, and driven about 10 minutes to the jetty on the Chamberlain River where we boarded the boat for the cruise. That afternoon there were only about 10-12 people on board but I would estimate the boat seats around 40. Being such a small group we had plenty of room to move around to get some great photos of the river and its wildlife, including a saltwater crocodile basking on the riverbank.

Vinnie and Tommy were very informative, explaining about the rock formations and history of the area, and pointing out different birds and rock wallabies. We pulled up at the Gorge, where there is a fish sanctuary and did a little fish feeding. The rangers warned us of the Archerfish that spit water with great accuracy, but I didn’t believe them until I got caught right in the eye! Besides the Archerfish there were catfish and a few barramundi all coming up to the surface in search of food.

After the fish feeding we were treated to sparkling wine and a fresh fruit platter whilst we took in the spectacular views around us. On the return trip we saw more rock wallabies and kept an eye out for more crocodiles but unfortunately there was only the one sunbathing that day.

Chamberlain Gorge

The whole excursion took about 1 1/2-2 hours and was a lovely respite from the trekking and climbing we had done on the previous day.
