Not just soufflé pancakes but banoffee soufflé pancakes with fresh banana, pavlova, cream, salted caramel popcorn and granola ($21). Sounds delicious, doesn’t it? My husband ordered it but I couldn’t get my head around having such a sweet dish for breakfast so I went with the Eggs Benedict Mac ‘n’ Cheese ($21.50).
We were paying a first visit to Decanter at 9am on a Saturday morning. I had booked well in advance thanks to recommendations from friends but when we arrived there was only one other table occupied and I wondered just how good those recommendations were. However, my misgivings were all for nothing. A couple came in looking for a table only to be told that everything was booked. Breakfast in Victoria Park must be more of a brunch affair!
My Eggs Benedict was seriously good. Poached eggs with a smooth Hollandaise sauce on top of very tasty macaroni cheese – yum! The dish can be ordered with bacon, smoked salmon or cauliflower. I ordered the bacon – it was breakfast after all. My husband spent no time at all in devouring his breakfast – he enjoyed the lightness of the pancakes and all the other excellent flavours. He assured me that it definitely was not too sweet. My tea was served in a china cup which was a lovely touch – tea always seems to taste better from real china.
A Victoria Park institution since 2015, Decanter bills itself as an American Tapas and Lounge Bar. There are certainly some interesting cocktails (Dickel Pickle anyone?) and whiskies on the menu but in the morning it was Decanter’s food offering that was my main interest.
An all-day menu is served Monday to Wednesday (7am-2pm) and Friday to Sunday (7am-4pm). This menu includes traditional favourites such as the big breakfast with eggs served on a toasted bun with bacon and beans but it also includes less classical items such as smoked jalapeno sausage, Paris mash, cauliflower wings and onion gravy ($24). Amongst other original dishes are a Birria Birria (Mexican beef stew) $18 and jerk chicken with pineapple salsa ($21.50).
There is also a dinner menu, featuring smoked meats that is only available on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm.
Decanter is not huge; it can probably seat around 70 people with a few high tables, some outside seating and booths for six. The dark decor certainly fits in with my idea of an American speakeasy but it may not work that well in the Perth sunshine.
All staff members were very friendly and helpful. The food came out relatively quickly and we were happy that we had taken the recommendations to try this place out. But next time, I will definitely be ordering the pancakes!
