The unassuming suburb of Conolly, most famous for the Joondalup Resort’s golf course, has been in the news lately. FyRE restaurant’s head chef and owner, Johnnie Mountain had a run in with an infamous Perth vegan that garnered world-wide attention. It seems that the unintentional publicity has had a silver lining, as the restaurant was packed.
Chef Johnnie, originally from the UK, has a background of classic cooking, working with the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierrie White. I met him a few years ago, when he was running the kitchen at the “House of Conti” restaurant (just a few weeks before COVID shut down Perth) and found him passionate about dining, and perfecting classic dishes. My mum still talks about his incredibly crispy fish and chips!
FyRE’s contemporary decor and warm lighting creates an atmosphere that is perfect for intimate dinners, special occasions or gatherings. We sat on high tables, in the side, alfresco of the restaurant, which is partially open to the neighbouring shopping centres’ car park.
The restaurant’s menu boasts a variety of dishes, showcasing the freshest local ingredients. From decadent seafood dishes or hearty lamb shanks, there’s something to tempt every palate at FyRE. A decent selection of wines, beers, and cocktails compliment the menu. We shared a bowl of crispy squid with kewpie mayo and lime. It was more-ish, melt in your mouth good.
Mr H ordered a Wagyu scotch fillet steak, which was charred and cooked to his liking (medium). The top-quality piece of meat was served with a caper butter, plus well seasoned potatoes and seasonal veg. I enjoyed the Humpty Doo Barramundi, plated up with fresh greens, potatoes and romesco. The well-seasoned veg rounded out a tasty main.
Desserts are classics like sticky date pudding, tiramisu and the like, but we were too full to be tempted. FyRE is well worth checking out, particularly for lovers of well-cooked meaty dishes.
