Mashawi is an Arabic word that means any meat or vegetable that can be roasted or barbecued and the Mashawi Restaurant in Mt Lawley does that very well.
Specialising in Moroccan and Middle Eastern food, Mashawi has an extensive menu that includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Situated near the busy Walcott Street crossroads in Beaufort Street, Mashawi was packed with diners when we visited on a wet Wednesday evening, Being very close to the Astor Theatre is obviously a bonus for the restaurant and we decided to have a pre-theatre meal – excellent choice!
In case you were wondering we went to see the Bay City Rollers which was a good night even although it was 50 and 60 somethings, dressed in tartan who were rocking in the aisles.
Every table is given a complimentary basket of pita bread and crackers as well as a small bowl of pickled vegetables.
After tucking into the freebies, we ordered Falafel ($12) that was served with a tahini dip. It was more than enough for a starter for four of us. Our vegetarian friend said it was the best falafel she had tasted.
We each chose a different main course: Kofta, tahini and potato tagine ($23.90), Prawn tagine ($25.90), Lamb afrah ($23.90) and Spicy Berber beef ($23.90) – all dishes are served with rice or couscous. Everyone enjoyed the meals although the prawns were not quite as good as the meat dishes which were delicious.
Mashawi has an extensive menu that also features kebabs and mixed grill offerings. Prices are very reasonable and portions generous. Food was served quickly and the servers were friendly.
The restaurant is BYO and corkage is $3 per bottle. There is also a belly dancer on Saturday nights that fits well with the Middle Eastern music and various Arabic-style ornaments dotted around the room.
Parking is not easy on Beaufort Street but there is a large car park off Walcott Street (paid ticketing) and it’s an easy walk from there to Mashawi.
