Seniorocity’s Guide to Scarborough

Have you visited Scarborough recently? The popular beachside spot enjoyed a big $30 million redevelopment in 2018 and there is lots to get up too there. The biggest draw has to be the long, wide sandy beach, as well as the many ocean view cafes, restaurants and bars. See the guide here…

The Beach
The 2.5km long, lifeguard patrolled Scarborough Beach is a lovely spot for a paddle or dip in the ocean. It’s also a grand place to relax under an umbrella with a good book, or a long walk along the shore.

The beach amphitheatre holds live entertainment events in summer.

Thanks to the revitalisation project, there are modern facilities all along the foreshore. There are changing rooms, showers and toilets, as well as free WiFi (on the main beach and foreshore areas). The grassed foreshore areas are great for a barbie, with plenty of BBQs and covered tables, making it a popular place to enjoy a sunset picnic.

Eating Out in Scarborough

Whatever style of food you enjoy, you’ll find lots of dining options along the Scarborough foreshore. From casual cafes, and fast takeaways, to lively bars and tasty restaurants. The bustling night markets (Thursday evenings) is held in warmer months, where a big range of food trucks. Found at the southern end of the strip, The Wild Fig is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as coffee and cake. Those with a sweet tooth will love Cocolat found by the Scarborough Beach Pool. Their taste bud tempting dessert menu features cakes, waffles, gelato (the rum and raisin looks delicious!), sundaes and lots of other sweet treats, with vegan and gluten free options. For the health-conscious, Monty’s cafe is particularly popular with those who like to eat fresh, healthy meals. There’s plenty of gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options on the menu too. A small alfresco area has seating overlooking the famous Scarborough clock. Read the Seniorocity review here.

As well as the above, there’s a Dome, new Irish bar The Galway Hooker, and chain favourites that include Grill’d Burgers, Zambrero Mexican and Nandos.

And with all the new venues, it’s nice to know Scarborough stalwart Peters By the Sea is still there!

Scarborough Beach Pool
If it’s a little chilly, or the sea a bit rough, you’re still able to enjoy a swim thanks to the Scarborough Beach Pool. The modern pool offers a warmer alternative to ocean swimming, and overlooks the beach. Here, there are two pools, one for children and families, while the other is used for swimming laps. The water is geo-thermally heated making the lap pool a comfortable 27 degrees. The concession price is just $5 for a visit.

Stay in Scarborough
Scarborough is an ideal location for a staycation close to home. There are lots of accommodation options including self-catering apartments and resorts. The biggest hotel in the area, Rendezvous, has a tropical style swimming pool, as well as a tennis court and an ocean view restaurant.

Grandkids
The $1.4 million Whale Playground is found overlooking Scarborough Beach. Inspired by Noongar culture, the play area features a blue whale skeleton as its main theme. Children of all ages and abilities will love to play here. For the big kids, Scarborough’s Skate Park, “The Snake Pit”, is one of the biggest skate parks in Australia. A climbing wall is a challenge for children and has a handy padded floor all around the base. There’s a half-court basketball court there too. And after all that excitement, why not head to one of the ice cream parlors for a treat.

Getting There
There are about 1400 free parking bays along the foreshore and they soon fill during busy summer days. There is also the multistory Manning Street Wilson carpark (first 2hrs free), or underground paid parking at Rendezvous Hotel. Alternatively, why not catch public transport? Regular busses stop at Scarborough, many via Glendalough Train Station.
