A new-old spot in the vibrant South Perth area, The Station, is quickly becoming a go-to spot for food lovers. Built in 1908, the former South Perth Police Station has been redeveloped. With a warm atmosphere, heritage accents and cental location it’s the kind of place where you can meet friends for a leisurely chat over coffee or a meal. Open breakfast, lunch and dinner, this pub-style venue is also home to Ludo, a more intimate, Euro-style dining experience.
The Station offers a casual vibe. The décor is a mix of contemporary style, federation features and comfort, making it an inviting place to relax and enjoy your meal. Whether you choose to sit indoors in a cosy booth or take advantage of the alfresco seating under bright red umbrellas (also dog friendly), there’s plenty to tick the boxes. Lunch and dinner you can expect pizzas, burgers, salads, share plates and hearty mains.
The brunch menu at The Station is a mix of classic favorites and creative dishes that bring a fresh twist to the table. You can’t go wrong with their eggs on toast ($15), served with two eggs your way and slice of toasted milk loaf. They have a kids’ menu too, though I’d serve that in plastic bowls, rather than giving china to a toddler.
I really enjoyed the garden stack of veggie fritters mushrooms, tomatoes and avo with balsamic dressing. It was quite different to anything I’ve eaten before – in a good way. The crispy fritters were very tasty and packed with all sorts of seasonal vegetables. I also ordered a side of bacon to go with this. Unfortunately, the bacon didn’t arrive with the stack, as it appeared that it was not put on the order. So, I was asked to walk back to the counter and wait in line to order and pay for the side of bacon. Meanwhile my veggie stack was getting cold… The waitress was apologetic, but more “we’re training people”, than “I’m sorry, let me fix that for you”. The bacon arrived when I had eaten about half of my dish. In this circumstance, I would have let the customer eat the hot meal they had paid for and comped the side. But whatever, it wasn’t the end of the world.
My coffee here wasn’t amazing. The flat white resembled more of a frothy cappuccino. Again, I overheard staff were being trained, so I let it go. All in all, the venue is lovely and the food good, so I’d give it another go and hope that the service is more polished next time.
Parking is at a premium on weekends. There are a few carparks around (paid), particularly near to the Zoo – but these are also very busy. The Station is a short 350m walk down Mends Street to the Swan River, if you’d like to walk off your meal.
Whether you’re a local or visiting South Perth or the Zoo, The Station is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or lunch in a relaxed setting.
