Union Kitchen, Mindarie

Union Kitchen Mindarie

Overlooking the blue waters of Mindarie Marina, you’ll find a bustling cafe, Union Kitchen. We stopped by the cafe for brunch, after an earlier visit to the marina, where we spotted the busy cafe after a brunch elsewhere. We made a plan to come back and see what all the fuss was about. There’s seating inside, though it seems most people opt to sit on the sunny terrace, enjoying the views of the water and watching the boats go by. It’s a great spot if you have a dog too.

The light and bright cafe offers plenty of tables and cosy booths. Order via QR codes. Outside there are plenty of tables, most shaded or under the verandah. This is where we got seated and to be honest, it did feel a little closed in, with only water glimpses through the tables in front of us.

We enjoyed a coffee (flat white in a mug) and an iced chocolate. There are a range of drinks available and the cafe is fully licensed. Breakfast offerings (until noon) range from full breakfasts and smashed avo to brekkie burgers and sweet American style pancakes. As well as the menu items, there is a selection of cakes, pastries, and more available from the glass cabinet by the counter. Union kitchen is also open for lunch.

I fancied the short rib dish, which also happened to be one of the most expensive brekkie dishes on the menu, at $33. I’m not sure if I’ve ever paid over $30 for brunch before. My expectations were high. The slow roasted beef short rib was tasty, on a bed of wilted spinach, and stacked potato rosti. Perfectly poached eggs were covered in lashings of jus and hollandaise. It was a good dish, and very hearty. I certainly wouldn’t be eating again until dinner. Union Kitchen Mindarie

Mr H ordered his go to – scrambled eggs on toast, with a side of bacon. They weren’t the soft, creamy, moist eggs you’d expect, but rather solid and dense. Mr H was disappointed, what a shame.

The café is very dog friendly, there are dog beds, water bowls as well as doggy treats, biscuits and “pupsicles”. Union Kitchen is a nice café with a stunning view. I did find it much more expensive than many other brunch spots, but I guess here you pay a premium for the view. Considering how busy the cafe was, I had expected more wow factor from the food.
