Wellington Dam, Collie Valley

Wellington Dam

Wellington Dam is one of those big-structure outings that never gets old. The scale of the wall is impressive, and the views from the lookout stretch over the valley, water and bushland beyond.

This was my first trip to Wellington Dam and I was unfamiliar with the parking situation, parking close to the cafe. It turns out, you can park much closer to the dam wall lookout, but I didn’t mind a short walk. It’s an easy wander, with a few steps to the viewing platforms for that sweeping perspective of the enormous mural that drapes the dam wall.

The mural is worth the trip alone – intricate, story-filled and mesmerising up close. Painted by Guido van Helten, the 8,000 square meter work is titled “Reflections”. Believed to be the world’s largest dam mural, the mural depicts local people and their stories and people, drawing inspiration from Collie’s history. It took four months to complete. There’s plenty of interperative boards around to learn a few fun facts too.

Do note that walking across the dam wall isn’t always possible; access generally opens on weekends in school holidays, so check before you visit. Even if the wall crossing is closed, there are plenty of vantage points to enjoy the view.

There’s a small café/kiosk nearby, but it’s not always open, like when we visited on a quiet winter weekday.  Bring a picnic as a plan B. Facilities are adequate, public toilets were well kept and there’s a few picnic benches to sit and watch the world go by. There’s plenty of nature to soak up.

If you’ve got extra time, pair the dam with a wander in Wellington National Park. The Collie River trails and picnic spots like Honeymoon Pool are close enough to make it a full, satisfying day out. For photographers, early morning or late afternoon gives you softer light on the mural and fewer people at the lookout.

Taking a drive to Wellington Dam is a simple, scenic adventure. This area is close to the Ferguson Valley and Bunbury, feels a world away from the city.
