Zumba Gold, Currambine

Zumba Gold, Currambine

Every Monday and a Thursday morning a group of mature aged ladies calling themselves โ€œThe Golden Girlsโ€ descend on the Currambine Community Centre, ostensibly to take part in a fitness class called Zumba Gold.

Zumba Gold is a lower intensity form of dance class, meant for the over 50โ€™s.

My friend Vikki talked me into going along with her one morning to try it out. โ€œ It’ll be funโ€ she said โ€œ Weโ€™re just a group of oldies having a good timeโ€ she said!

I turned up at 9:30am ready to cruise through the dances- after all, some of these ladies were 25 years older than me! I felt somewhat underdressed in my leggings and t-shirt, surrounded by a coterie of women with beaded and coin adorned belly dancing scarves tied around their hips.

The instructor Jane- also wearing said scarf, took to the stage to get everyone’s attention. We were all told to take the class at our own pace and have a good time. โ€œEasy!โ€ I thought as I looked around at the group around me, the average age being 65.

Jane hit the button and out blasted high energy Salsa music. All around me women were Latin dancing in time to the music whilst I was still trying to find my feet and my rhythm.

After around 3 or 4 songs, just as I was starting to find my groove, the tempo changed to 80โ€™s disco music.

On and on we danced, one routine after another for a solid hour, with Jane shouting out instructions, encouragement and throwing in a few extra cheeky dance moves. I did consider giving up but was shamed into pushing through by 82-year-old Bernice on the front row showing me how it’s done!

Everyone really got into the groove and I could see how much they were enjoying themselves. No competition or judging, just an absolutely fantastic and fun time.

After the class some of the ladies met up for a coffee and I got to chat with a few of them. Not only do they go along to the Zumba class, but they also meet regularly for social outings. They are such a friendly and inclusive group that they even have overseas visitors joining the class when they are in town.

I can honestly recommend this class to anyone wanting to get out, have fun and make new friends whilst getting fit. And don’t worry if you are not over 50, they’re not ageist! I had an absolute ball! and now, I am off to buy myself a belly dancing scarf!
