Beth’s in the new Ballie Hill precinct is a charming little bakery-café. Housed in a stunningly refurbished heritage building, Beth’s is perfect for a mid-morning bite, or coffee on the run. The space has a fresh feel, while being totally sympathetic to its storied past.

Pop in for a coffee, and find yourself a table by an old fireplace, or out on the sunny verandah overlooking the parklands.

Cabinets full of freshly baked goodies that are very hard to resist – there’s sweet and savory pastries, cake, and more.

Beth’s takes its baking seriously – the tiramisu bun’s look particularly tempting. It’s worth noting if you are gluten intolerant, there are no food options here.

The cafe is ideal for catching up with friends, or meeting family with the kids and enjoying takeaways on the vast lawns. The noise level is friendly buzz rather than loud, and there’s a relaxed, local vibe that makes you want to linger over a second cuppa. The coffee is good (though could have been a little hotter) and my parents enjoyed a slice of carrot cake.

There’s a handy coffee window if you’re visiting with your dog. It’s a lovely spot for a stroll.

Being part of the Ballie Hill precinct means you can easily combine your visit with a stroll around the surrounding grounds of Elizabeth Baillie Park. The Berwick pub is right next door. Parking is nearby, which we found easy on a weekday morning.

Mildred Creak Playground is found at the far side of the park, fenced and gated with plenty for grandkids to explore.

Built in 1912, the Rotunda Maternity Hospital founded by Elizabeth Baillie was also used for a Spanish influenza outbreak. After repurposing several times (for geriatric rehabilitation and returning servicemen who had contracted tuberculosis), the center eventually closed in 1998, and was entered onto the heritage register. You can see many fascinating photos and the history of the building around its grand staircase.

If you love discovering new spots around Perth, Beth’s is well worth a detour for its heritage charm alone.
