Bike Trails in the Perth Hills

Bike Trails Perth Hills

Love riding on gravel? The Perth Hills has many bush trails to enjoy a bike ride through the bush. Well known for its mountain bike (MTB) trails, there are also plenty of spots for those who prefer to set a more leisurely pace. Biking in Perth is a great hobby to get into. Once you have a bike, and all the gear, it’s a cheap and easy activity to enjoy in the great outdoors. See the Seniorocity guide to Bike Trails in the Perth Hills here:

Cycling in the Perth Hills

The most famous bike trail in the Perth Hills has to be the Munda Bidi. This is an 1060km off-road cycle path that runs through the forest from Mundaring, all the way to Albany! You can tackle the whole trail, making use of the twelve purpose-built overnight facilities along its route. Or simply enjoy a small (but challenging) bite of the track from Mundaring to Kalamunda.

A much shorter trail for two wheels (or two feet) is the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail. This 40+ km loop trail is popular for both riding and hiking. If 40kms still sounds too much, you can break the ride down in much smaller sections. It also takes in John Forrest National Park – which is just spectacular during waterfall and wildflower season. Since it was once the old railway track, all inclines and decents are gradual – and there are plenty of pubs along the way! Read the Seniorocity review here.

The Pedal and Pint Trail is a brilliant way to experience the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail. As the old train line connected Mundaring to its many villages, there just happened to be a pub by many of its old railway stations! Ride to a pub or three, making a day of enjoying a pint in a beer garden, as well as a hearty pub lunch. The ride from Mundaring Hotel to the Mount Helena Tavern is just lovely and you can pedal a bit further to The Parkerville Tavern too!

The Mundaring Hotel

If you’re not into mountain biking at Lake Leschenaultia, there is an alternative for those that enjoy a slower pace. Try the flat and peaceful 3km lake loop pathway, which has plenty of wildflowers from late winter onwards. There’s plenty of free picnic and BBQ facilities too. Read the Seniorocity review of Lake Leschenaultia here.

Mountain Bike Trails in the Perth Hills

Adrenaline junkies will love the Perth Hills’ many MTB networks found in the Mundaring and Kalamunda areas. Most of these are suited to experienced mountain bike users, though some have beginners’ trails.

A 12km mountain bike trail network is found in native bushland at Lake Leschenaultia. This includes 9 trails ranging from 540m to 1.9km long. There are tracks with easy to moderate levels of difficulty to choose from. Be sure to treat yourself at Reflections Coffee & Kiosk (open weekends) afterwards!

The Goat Farm is a designated mountain bike park. Found on the scarp of the Perth Hills, in Greenmount, there’s a dedicated skills park and MTB trails. The steep trails are very challenging, even for experienced riders. The bike park is designed to cater for downhill and cross-country riders too.

The busy Kalamunda Trail Network has 40km of MTB trails. The hub for WA’s largest and busiest MTB network is at the old Calamunda Camel Farm (now closed). There’s a café here too. At the Black Stump area, you’ll also find a pump track, where you can hone your skills.
