Opened in December last year, the restaurant at Redgum Wine Estate just outside of Dwellingup is already proving a firm favourite with foodies.
Owners Ben Funnekotter and Maree Lawson, who purchased the property in 2018, are on hand to chat to patrons about the menu and especially about their wines. Both are passionate about wine and together with experienced winemaker Nathan Shultz, produce sparkling, white, red, rose and fortified wine on the estate.
The menu is small but well crafted including smaller dishes such as a cheeseboard ($20), Baked Brie ($18) and Chilled Crabpot ($27). As we were going out for dinner later in the evening, my husband and I chose the small plate of French duck rillette ($24) and ordered a bowl of chips ($12). The duck rillette was very good and came with cornichons and French rustic bread – I would have preferred more bread surface, maybe a baguette style, to spread the duck but really enjoyed it. Chips are advertised as hot and crispy and that is just what they were – yum!
We brought our senior group to the restaurant on the following day and tried the mushroom crepes ($23), which were excellent. Several people had the Gourmet steak sandwich with chips ($30) and two had the Savoury mince and cheese toasted jaffle ($14). Everyone enjoyed their lunch but apologies as there are no pictures – everybody was starving and not inclined to wait for photos!
Our group also did the wine tastings. These tastings are offered as 6 wines for $10 or 3 wines for $5. As our group of ten all wanted to try the wine, Ben kindly threw in another two wines to taste. The wines had all the mineral type taste one would expect from Dwellingup’s gravelly soil and they went down a treat. We all agreed that our favourite was the 2022 fortified Grenache, which retails at $45 a bottle.
The restaurant itself is light and airy, it’s like a big farmhouse with a nod to provincial France.
There is a lovely fireplace – very comforting on the Sunday when it was lashing with rain outside.
As well as inside seating there is a large balcony with views looking over the Marrinup State Forest to Dawesville and the Indian Ocean in the distance.
There is also a well-curated gift shop inside the restaurant and a small children’s playground outside. Redgum hold culinary events and are happy to host weddings for up to 70 seated guests.
