For British ex-pats like us, the Great British Chippy in Currambine is like a little taste of home. If youโre Australian or from some other corner of the planet, you may never had traditional style British fish and chips. They are a slightly different to what youโre likely to find at Fremantleโs Fishing Boat Harbour.
The first thing youโll notice when you walk in, is the shiny frying range, which was specially imported from the UK. This is all part of the authentic experience. You can sit on benches whilst waiting for your take away order or dine in the small dining area at the rear of the fish n chip shop. Thatโs what we always do, we love to tuck into our fish and chip supper whilst the cod and chips are still piping hot.
North Atlantic Cod and Haddock, like youโd find in a chippy in the UK, is the main fish thatโs used. Local varieties are also available. For me, the British experience is all about the thick, flaky cod, hand cut chips that are perfectly imperfect โ all different shapes and sizes and the sides – mushy peas, chip shop curry and gravy. My husband has a big appetite and he was happy with his portion of cod and chips.
I have a smaller appetite, so chose the senior special, great value at just $12. Our sides of chip shop curry sauce and mushy peas were spot on too.
British favourite, breaded scampi is also on the menu, as well as black pudding, battered jumbo sausages, king ribs, steak and kidney pudding, squid rings, burgers and more. If youโre still feeling peckish after all that, try a deep fried Mars Bar! We washed down our fish n chips with a cup of Yorkshire tea. British soft drinks, like Iron Bru, are also available.
At the GBC the freshly fried fish is moist and coated in a crisp golden batter, we can’t get enough of it. Because, as my Yorkshire husband says โthereโs nowt like a bit of North Atlantic Codโ.
