Cottesloe’s Napoleon Street is home to popular western suburbs haunt, Vans. The busy café-bistro is buzzing morning noon and night, seven days a week, 6.30am to 9.30pm. That’s handy to know, that you can pretty much go there whenever and it will be open. Service at Vans Cottesloe is efficient – we’re quickly seated and brought menus and water. Though we’re one of the first to arrive for dinner, the main dining room soon becomes busy. Thanks to acoustic padding on the ceiling, the ambiance isn’t overly loud.
The menu changes regularly and has plenty of interesting modern Australian dishes, many with a spicy, Asian flavour. Popular choices include the salmon hot potato cake for brunch and a lemongrass spiced beef salad on the evening menu. The wine list is excellent and cocktails are also a popular tipple at Vans. If you’re dining earlier in the day, you’re in luck as the coffee is also top notch.
To start, we shared a delicious hawker roll ($20). It consists of a house made roti flat bread and an Indonesian pulled beef rendang curry. The rich and tender beef is topped with pickled cucumber, candied chilli, coriander yogurt, and fresh Asian herb salad.
I love the market fish,
My husband loved the sirloin steak ($44). A touch on the pricey side, but he says it was so good it was totally worth it. The slightly charred, smoky steak is served with a tasty parsnip, roast garlic and haloumi tart, pan-fried rainbow chard, and a red wine jus. We shared a basket of fries too – but probably didn’t really need them!
Still hungry? There’s a small dessert menu, and of course a well-stocked cabinet with cake and other freshly baked treats.
Vans Cottesloe is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and “coffee and cake”.
