Margaret River Farmers Market Review
I love farmers markets, there is something special about buying produce from the person who grew or made it with their own hands. Farmers markets connect us with the land: food and produce that has come straight from the farm to the stall, rather than the sanitised version served up by the supermarkets with their plastic-wrapped, blemish-free goods.
Margaret River farmers market has been running since 2002 and is the Go-To place for fresh seasonal produce from local farmers and small-batch producers. Open every Saturday morning year-round the market stalls are run by working farmers and producers from the Margaret River Region and the surrounding areas. The range of produce available is amazing, and being seasonal, every week brings new items.
We went along in January whilst we were visiting the area; we only went for a browse, but came home with bags bulging and even then we had to stop ourselves from buying more. We started by doing a slow wander past the different stalls before we honed in on the must-haves that we couldn’t leave without. The atmosphere reminded me of the open-air markets of my childhood where stalls were piled high with fresh ripe produce. The offerings ranged from farm-fresh free-range eggs, vegetables and fruits, meats and fish to homemade condiments, wine, flowers and plants and bakery items, including the famous Margaret River wood-fired bread.
We loaded our bags with fruits and herbs, along with eggs and bread, my husband even bought a jar of vegan chilli and garlic cashew cheese after declaring it delicious and a must-have. Before leaving we couldn’t go past the Claudio Biscotti Italian Bakery stall without buying a tray of Italian pastries for dessert that night, and we had to treat our grandson to poffertjes from the Pancake Bar.
Entry to the market area is free and is currently running under COVID-19 guidelines, so there were the SafeWA QR Code check-in and hand sanitiser at strategic points. Dogs are not allowed into the market area.
