Zig Zag Cultural Centre Kalamunda

Set in the heart of the Perth Hills, the Zig Zag Cultural Centre is a lovely first stop for a day out in Kalamunda. Found within the Kalamunda Cultural Precinct, between Kalamunda Library and the Kalamunda History Village, the centre brings together local information, art, culture and handy facilities all under one roof. It is around a 35-minute drive from Perth, making it an easy outing when you feel like a change of scenery without travelling too far.

The centre is home to the Perth Hills Visitor Centre, which is especially useful if you are planning to explore the surrounding area. Friendly staff can help with local knowledge, maps and brochures, whether you are looking for a scenic walk, a wildflower spot, a waterfall, a vineyard, a café, an art gallery or somewhere interesting to take visiting family. There is also information on accommodation and attractions throughout wider Western Australia.

For walkers and cyclists, the Visitor Centre is a handy place to call into before heading out. It stocks bushwalking and cycling guides, local area maps, WA National Park passes, and guide books and maps for the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail. You can also pick up local bus and train timetables, which is helpful if you are planning your visit without a car.

The retail area at the Visitor Centre is worth browsing too. It offers a range of quality gifts and souvenir merchandise, with many items locally made, WA made or Australian made. It is a good spot to find a thoughtful gift, a memento of a Perth Hills visit, or something a little different from the usual high street options.

Art lovers should make time for the Zig Zag Gallery. This boutique-style gallery has an active exhibition program, with solo exhibitions, group shows and displays from organisations and institutions. The gallery aims to encourage and promote local and regional cultural activity, so it is a great place to discover work by emerging and professional artists. With a changing exhibition program, there is often something new to see each time you visit.

The centre also includes seminar room facilities, which may be useful for community groups, workshops, meetings, training days or small conferences. The modern seminar room has a total capacity of 80 people and can be divided into two smaller rooms of 25 people each. Facilities include audio-visual equipment, free Wi-Fi, free parking and access to local catering, all in a peaceful Perth Hills setting.

Another bonus of visiting the Zig Zag Cultural Centre is its location. The Kalamunda History Village is right next door, and entry tickets can be purchased through the Visitor Centre. Kalamunda’s shops, cafés and leafy streets are also close by, so it is easy to turn a quick visit into a relaxed morning or afternoon out.

Kalamunda History Museum

Mason and Bird is also located nearby at 7 Williams Street. This popular Kalamunda café is open seven days a week from 8am to 3pm, with walk-ins only and no reservations required. The kitchen and coffee close at 2.45pm, and the café is closed on public holidays. It is a convenient option if you would like to add breakfast, brunch, lunch or coffee to your visit.

Accessibility is good, with parking close by and the centre located next to the library. The combination of visitor information, local art, gifts, nearby history and cafés makes the Zig Zag Cultural Centre a very useful and enjoyable starting point for exploring Kalamunda and the wider Perth Hills.

  1. […] I love the village feel of Kalamunda. The small town is full of cafes, gift shops, second hand bookshops and more. Stroll around the shops and visit the Zig Zag Cultural centre. This is where the information centre is located – handy if you’re not familiar with the area. Read the Seniorocity review on the Zig Zag Cutural Centre here. […]
