Xanadu Winery, like its namesake, is a little paradise in Margaret River. We drive down the long vine-lined driveway to itโs restaurant and cellar door โ looking forward to a lunch with our daughter. The restaurant overlooks manicured lawns, where people can enjoy lunch on warmer days. On this chilly day, we dined inside the immense restaurant, which has a feel of a ski-lodge, with its vaulted pine ceilings, stunning art and huge stone fireplace.
Thereโs a few ways that you can dine at Xanadu. Your lunch can be as formal or informal as you would like. Share a platter and bottle of wine on the lawns or try a little bit of everything in the โXanadu Festโ, a chefโs choice degustation for $85pp. Thereโs also a three course โprix fixeโ set menu for $60pp.ย Xanadu have recently been awarded the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Melbourne Wine Show. Their 2016 cabernet sauvignon is amongst just a handful of WA wineries to win what is regarded as Australiaโs top wine award. We started our lunch with a flute of Yering Station bubbles, one of Xanadu’s sister vineyards. The was delicious while we looked over the tastebud tempting menu.
My husband savoured every flavour of the smoked pork hock. Plump broad beans, a black pudding puree, mint and apple makes up this dish which is finished with thin and crispy pigโs ears, which are just like eating pork crackle.
I love the katalfi prawn dish, which is served upon what appears to be a UFO! The beautiful bowl is adorned with whole prawns, wrapped in crisp pastry, sitting on a bed of smoked almonds, quinoa and pomegranate.
The best of the mains were my daughters Arkady lamb belly dish. She let me try a bit of the ever so delicious rolled meat, which was served with parsnip, green olive, an almond vinaigrette and broccolini.
I chose the market fish of the day, which was perfectly pan fried and accompanied with fennel, and a tasty potato salad with tartare sauce, herbs and lemon.
The courses were staggered, so we had plenty of time to chat over a bottle of Chardonnay and enjoy the ambiance in between. Weโd loved every bite of the lunch so far, so we just HAD to order dessert. I loved the mille-feuille puff (meaning million layers) with salted caramel, vanilla, praline, and dark chocolate sorbet.
My husband chose a blue gorgonzola cheese board. The cheese, which was creamy and sweet, was spread on lavosh crackers and served with nut and fruit pastes.
The winery is very family friendly too. With a shady kids play area opposite the restaurant, perfect for if you have grandchildren in tow.
After all that amazing food, we just had to go across to the cellar door and buy a few bottles of that fantastic Chardonnay.
I cannot recommend Xanadu enough. The staff are so friendly, welcoming and weโd go back for another long, luscious lunch in a heartbeat. Thank you for having us!
