You wouldn’t expect a small country town like Northam to have a wine bar, but as we recently found out, Laura’s Wine Bar in Northam is the perfect place to spend an evening with friends enjoying a nice glass of red.
A newish addition to the town, Laura’s is part wine bar, part book shop and part congenial gathering place for a pleasant chat with the locals. The rustic brick building was purpose-built by the owner, architect Brian Klopper, with curved vaulted ceilings giving the feeling of an old wine cellar, adding to the cosy ambience; and the bookshelf lined walls and scattered casual seating invite you to linger a while longer whilst you find must have book purchases.
The bar is a very casual venue, no upmarket millennials to be found here; it’s more of a local meeting place where everyone knows each other as it usually is in a country town. We were welcomed to join the locals gathered around the outdoor fire where there was dog toasting itself whilst there was a fair bit of banter going on around him.
The feeling I got from my visit was that rather than a business running solely to make money, it was a labour of love for the owner, who has managed to pull off that rare feat of making you feel like you are in his own private entertainment area where you are just one of his mates there to have a yarn.
The wine prices are very reasonable, cheaper than Perth prices, and there are food plates and snacks available if you are feeling a little peckish.
The wine bar only opens on weekdays and has different entertainment during the week; for example Tuesday night is games night and I did see an advert for social tango lessons (although I’m not sure if that’s still running), the bar also hosts book launches and small private parties.
