Senior-focused equipment is popping up at parks all over Perth! We visited the new Senior Park at Neil McDougall Park in Como. It’s a large park, with lake and plenty of birdlife, making it a great spot for a little light exercise.
The senior area is similar to an outdoor gym. It features a range of equipment – balance beams, core twisters, wave bars and more. These all help to improve the body’s balance as well as strengthen motor skills. Unlike the Jo Wheatly senior park, where all the equipment is marked with descriptive signs, we had to figure out what we had to do here. Hopefully the city of South Perth installs helpful signs soon. The exercises are designed to gently move all areas of the body. There’s balance beams, steps and bridges, with rails for extra support.
A shoulder wheel is to help improve the mobility of your neck and shoulders.
Finger stair exercises for fine motor skills development.
If you take along grandchildren to the park, they will love the neighbouring play area with swings, a flying fox and climbing frame. There are public toilets at the park, as well as picnic tables, BBQs, drink fountains and lots of natural shade from the mature trees. Afterwards we enjoyed a gentle stroll around the lake.
Along the way we spotted plenty of very friendly ducks, moorhens and even a black swan.
The footpath is flat and it’s a relatively short walk. Sporadic benches are handy to sit, rest and enjoy the view.
There is more fitness equipment along the way, if you want to stop for a work out of a cross trainer! It sure is cheaper than a gym membership, and it’s so lovely being in the great outdoors.
The Senior Park at the leafy Neil McDougall Park is designed to enhance physical and mental well-being for seniors of all abilities. Be sure to try it out!
